Traditional Music is Alive and Well in New York

We run concerts, weekends, classes, singing parties, and get-togethers, all with an emphasis on traditional folk music of all flavors.

All of our in-person events have had to be cancelled but following our online events below there is a list of some other online events

Virtual Fall Folk Music Weekend, November 6-8. Details to come.
TradMaD Camp 2020,  at Pinewoods Camp in Plymouth MA is POSTPONED until 2021, August 28 - September 3. Pinewoods Camp was not open this summer.   And please check the websites of the 2020 staff we had booked, to look for any concerts they are streaming.

As well as the events listed below, we have occasional Singing Parties and other social events. Our full newsletter lists these as well as having comprehensive listings of many other events around town. Request a sample copy of our newsletter sent by mail (include your postal address).

2020 - our 55th year

  • Sun, Sept. 20, 2-4pm: (Third Sunday of each month)  Staten Island Shanty Session;

  • Fri, Oct 2:  If I Had a Song… Workshopping Songs in Progress; 7-9pm; Facilitated by Pat Lamanna.
    In this two-hour collegial workshop, songwriters will each present one “folk style” song in progress. Each will then receive constructive critiques and supportive suggestions from the other participants, as well as from the facilitator. Strictly limited to six participants with Zoom access.   • Sun, October 4:  The Seaport Virtual Chantey Sing, 2-4pm, first Sundays through  December. Participants from the New York metro area, across the country, and across the Pond get together on zoom for a session of sea songs.  The South Street Seaport Museum, The New York Packet, and the Folk Music Society of New York are pleased to welcome you to the monthly Sing.  Registration details are:

  • Folk Music Notebook runs a radio folk festival 24/7 hosted by Ron Olesko and others.
  • Folk Music is back on WBAI! Thursdays, 10:00 pm to midnight. An eclectic program which delves into the wide array of folk music, with rotating hosts including Richard Barr and Ed Haber. 99.5 FM on your radio dial. You can see playlists on their Facebook page: or catch the show streaming at archives.
  • Scott Ainslie, who has performed for the Club at TradMaD and elsewhere, is offering Live-Streamed Concerts
  • Our friends at Jalopy Theatre have a bunch of online concerts, sings, and workshops scheduled. Check them out.
  • Folk Alliance has a listing of online live streaming concerts: FAI Community Live-Stream Concerts. (Artists: you do not have to be a Folk Alliance member to submit your concerts).
  • Dale Adamson and Judith English (thank you) are publishing a calendar of online folk dance sessions for people who want to dance, watch, and to help schedule new sessions (to know about conflicts).
  • The Augusta Heritage Center has online classes. Our own Jen Larson will be teaching bluegrass vocals with Joe Newberry! To stay posted on what's happening, join its Facebook group by doing a search on 'Augusta 2020'
